Costume

I want to have fairly neutral colours to connotate no certain emotion and the fact that parts of the song are both happy, sad and content. I think this will reflect the actual artist, Ellie Goulding, because she has a fairly husky yet unique voice and she is also quite low maintenance and is barely seen in the media with gives her a homely and earthy quality, I am going to reflect this by using a lot of earth tones with the costume and mise en scene such as a forest scene, using fur blankets and coats with minimal make up and her hair will be stylised in a way that looks as if it is natural and unkempt and leaning into more folk music singers hair that is called bed hair.

Analysing Media Texts

Daisy portrays a modern day Alice in Wonderland. There are various aspects of the video that link to the book and the film. Her costume consists of blouses with ruffles and elaborate dresses which is relevant to 1865 when the book first came out. However she modernises it with big leather boots, heavy eye make up and other youthful contemporary accessories. Within the first 30 seconds there is a shot of a person in a rabbits costume which immediately makes the audience think of Alice in Wonderland, however this person is just wearing the costume and running around, not really impersonating a rabbit which gives it a comedic element. Daisy actually resembles Alice, with blonde hair and youthful features. An iconic thing from Alice in Wonderland is the rabbit hole that Alice falls through and goes into a different world. Daisy falls through into what looks like on old abandoned house with worn down walls. Another iconic feature is sign posts, a sign with arrows pointing in opposite directions one saying “this way” and the other saying ”that way” is featured in this video. Daisy is seen walking up to a small house not big enough for a human as seen in the films and book. Just before the chorus Daisy finds a small phial with a liquid in it, she drink it and as the chorus begins, which is more fast paced than the verses the cuts quicken and some shots and speeded up as if the liquid in the phial and made her change. Other iconic features of Alice in Wonder land is oddly shaped and coloured objects. For example a big cupcake, as if from the tea party, and sheep in various multi colours. The target audience is young girls. This is because there are a lot of references to femininity in this video such as close up shots of various flowers and flower beds and pink and orange cupcakes. The audience will be young, 12-21 because daisy herself was 16 when this video was released in January. Also, the featured artists rapper Chipmunk is also young. Another reason why the audience is most likely young people is the animals in the video, Daisy is seen in a medium shot holding a small big, younger girls are more likely to be interested in animals than adults.

Analysing other video's

The Saturdays- Higher

The very first shot is of a road with yellow taxi's driving on this, this is iconic of New York city. You can also see a yellow school bus which is iconic of America itself. Traffic jams are also something you'd expect in New York. In television shows such as Sex And The City they show that a lot of the apartment buildings have high sets of stairs leading from the side walk to the door, having these concrete stairs in the video connotates style and makes it more girly because of the Sex And The City reference. The costume the five girls wear suggest summer time because they wear modern loose clothes appropriate for warn weather. The dancers on the concrete stairs wear modern urban clothing, their races are also what seems to be black which suggests people from that race are better hip hop dancers. In this video the sun is shinning which suggests summer and although New York is perceived to be grey, harsh, concrete and lacks emotion, there is a lot of colour in this video which connotates lots of different emotions, all of them mixed in together suggests high spirits and hope which goes along with their youthful and feminine girl band image.
The narrative is fairly clear. It starts with a typical New York morning with a busy street and the people in their cars look to be angry with road rage from the hectic traffic. Other shots include a medium shot through the back of a car window of a homeless man walking through the traffic and an elderly man reading a newspaper shaking his head at younger people going by. The setting up until this point has little sun and is slightly gloomy to represent people attitudes, the girls get out of the car and the next shot had a luminous sun shining. The girls walk past the dancers on the concrete stairs who are seating until this point and then they get up and start dancing. This connotates that the girls have a sort of vibe to them to let people inabitions go and emancipate. Female police officer dancing represents that the song or the band allow even the stereotype of a hard no mercy police woman to let go and have fun.

Analysing lyrics- Lights Ellie Goulding

Lyrics comes in one 00:07
I had a way then; 00:07-00:10
Perhaps she had her way or path in life and then it changed
Losing it all on my own; 00:11-00:14
I had a heart then; 00:15-00:0018
But the queen has been overthrown; 00:18-00:22
Maybe she is referring to herself as the queen, someone or something has taken her place
And I'm not sleeping now; 00:23-00:27
The dark is too hard to beat; 00:27-00:31
And I'm not keeping now; 00:31-00:35
The strength I need to push me; 00:35-00:38
Push me suggests she wants something or someone back however she talks about how she doesn’t have that strength to push her perhaps she is weak and vulnerable

You show the lights that stop me turn to stone; 00:39-00:43
You shining when I'm alone; 00:43-00:46
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong; 00:47-00:51

It says "tell myself that I'll be strong" but not that she will be strong
And dreaming when they're gone; 00:51-00:54
Suggests she will be able to rest easy when something is gone, but dreaming suggests it may not happen but in her dreaming life she wants it to
Cuz they're calling, calling, calling me home
Calling, calling, calling home; 00:55-01:03
They're is plural and suggests more than one element is calling her home
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone; 01:03-01:07
You shining when I'm alone (home); 01:08-01:12

Noises, I play within my head; 01:12-01:18
Voices or noises in a persons head suggest mental fragility
Touch my own skin; 01:19-01:21
And hope that I’m still breathing; 01:22-01:25
Suggests she’s not sure if she is real, not sure of her own reality
And I think back to when; 01:27-01:30
My brother and my sister slept; 01:31-01:35
Maybe she is not with her siblings anymore because she relates back to the past tense, also suggests that she didn’t sleep when they did which connotates a protective nature over her family
In an unlocked place; 01:36-01:39
The only time I feel safe; 01:39-01:43
She feels safe with her family even if the place isn’t technically safe

You show the lights that stop me turn to stone; 01:43-01:47
You shining when I'm alone; 01:47-01:50
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong; 01:51-01:55
And dreaming when they're gone; 01:55-01:58
Cuz they're calling, calling, calling me home
Calling, calling, calling home; 01:59-02:07
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone; 02:07-02:11
You shining when I'm alone (home); 02:12-02:16

Lights, lights (x14); 02:32-02:45

You show the lights that stop me turn to stone; 02:47-02:51
You shining when I'm alone; 02:51-02:54
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong; 02:55-02:59
And dreaming when they're gone; 02:59-03:02
Cuz they're calling, calling, calling me homeCalling, calling, calling home; 03:03-03:11
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone; 03:11-03:15
You shining when I'm alone; 03:16-03:20

Home, home; 03:20-03:48
Repetition of the word home suggests her yearning for a place like home

home is also something we link with safety and contenment, however her calling for it suggests she doesnt feel safe or content

(Lights, lights, lights)...; every seconds from 03:20-03:51
Song ends at 04:06

Analysing Music Video's

Fall Out Boy- A Little Less 16 Candles

This is a music video however the actual song is only played in sections, leaving time for a story to unfold, making this not just a music video but a short film too.
First shot is an establishing shot of a car on a cliff edge and then pans upwards to show a city skyline, assuming from the tall buildings this skyline is of New York. Writing appears over the shot with the words 'FALL OUT BOY' in red which connotates lust or danger. Over the shoulder shot is used to show one of the band members of the band, this shows that he is the priority in this scene, then a medium close up two shot of the man with a woman who are about to kiss. What appears at first to be a fade in of the face of a woman is actually shown to be the reflection through the car window and then a close up of that same female to show her mouth while she growls to show her teeth to show that she is a vampire. A medium close up is used to show that there is more than just this one female vampire, there are two others either side of her. A pan across the car roof shows two of the vampires climbing onto it, this is sped up to go along with the idea that vampires have super speed. The next few shots become more fast paced to connotate their vampire speed and the human woman screaming makes the audience scared for her and the member of the band she is with because these were the first people that we saw so they are the protagonists and the vampires are the antagonists. The hero's of the story appear who also become protagonists as they kill all of the vampires. This video had a script and the first line is said by one of the hero's, 'you call yourself hunters' to which the human man in the car replies ‘well next time you be the bait’, proving that this whole scenario was set up by the antagonists. An establishing shot of the setting show the first speaker jumping off the cliff making it obvious he is also a vampire. Costume is contemporary to the time period which is 2009. As the song begins 1 minute and 23 seconds into the video the pace of the cuts quicken to keep up with the pace of the beat in the music. Something iconographic of vampires is coffins, i more contemporary version of a coffin is used to show then he sleep during the day and comes out for nightime. During the song the full band play with their instruments however the story continues, focusing on the vampire in the band. A close up of a priest with shadow covering half of his face, this connotates that she is not a traditional priest which are seen to be “good”, it shows that he has some dark in him, the fact that half his face is covered in shadows suggests that perhaps he is hiding something. A flash back of the vampire is obvious because of the close up then cuts to a different setting on a dark street.
The narrative is clear in this music video. The band are all vampire hunters, Pete Wentz who is in the band has been turned into a vampire but he wants to take revenge on them so they all go out hunting together.
The genre is a action comedy because for the most part it is about slaying vampires and fighting however there are some comedic parts in it.
This video contrasts with historys perception of vampires because it is not usual for a vampire to fight back against his own kinds and nor normal for a vampire to fight alongside humans.
The audience is Fall Out Boy fans. People who are interested in vampires or the super natural may also be interested in this video.

Song Choice

The song I have chosen to make a music video for is the song Lights by Ellie Goulding.
I at first had narrowed it donw to two different songs. Run by Leona Lewis and Guns n Horses by Ellie Goulding. However when I found the song Lights I liked it because it doesn't already have an existing music video. I didn't want the song I chose to have a music video because I didn't want any expectations of how it should be like and I didn't want to be tempted to subconciously copy parts of it. I think the song has a good beat to it and parts of it are slow but other parts have a faster beat which is what I wanted because I'd like to incorporate some dance into it.

Song Lyrics
I had a way then
Losing it all on my own
I had a heart then
But the queen has been overthrown
And I'm not sleeping now
The dark is too hard to beat
And I'm not keeping now
The strength I need to push me
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shining when I'm alone
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong
And dreaming when they're gone
Cuz they're calling, calling, calling me home
Calling, calling, calling home
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shining when I'm alone
Noises, I play within my head
Touch my own skin
And hope that im still breathing
And I think back to when
My brother and my sister slept
In an unlocked place
The only time I feel safe
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shining it when I'm alone
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong
And dreaming when they're gone
Cuz they're calling, calling, calling me home
Calling, calling, calling home
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shining when I'm alone
Lights, lights (x14)
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shining when I'm alone
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong
And dreaming when they're gone
Cuz they're calling, calling, calling me home
Calling, calling, calling home
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shining when I'm alone
Home, home
(Lights, lights, lights)...

Target audience

Young girls from the ages of 13-25. Mainstream pop music listeners because the artist is mainstream and very popular in the UK at the moment. The song is fairly unheard of so perhaps the audience should be young girls who like to be origional and find the new trends first. Because it is a mainstream and contemporary artist I assume the listeners will be in the know of the latest trends and up to date with the current popular artists. Ellie gouldings sound is particularly unique so the audience may have their own origional sound and tastes.

History of music video's

A music video is a short film or video that accompanies a complete piece of music/song. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos go back much further, they came into their own in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium, and later with the launch of VH1. The term "music video" first came into popular usage in the early 1980s. Prior to that time, these works were described by various terms including "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional (promo) clip" or "film clip". In Chinese entertainment, music videos were simply known as MTVs because the network was responsible for bringing music videos to popularity in that country. Music videos are now known as MVs in Chinese entertainment.

Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film. Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation and live action. Many music videos do not interpret images from the song's lyrics, making it less literal than expected.

The first ever music video was played on MTV inn 1981. This was a song from a band called The Buggles called Video Killed The Radio Star.
